Becoming a Trustee

In odd numbered years APTA members have the opportunity to submit a consent form to APTA to be considered for the slate of candidates to serve on PT-PAC Board of Trustees. All forms must be received before January 1. These will then be submitted to the APTA Board of Directors for their consideration at the March Board meeting. Effective January 2010, and in even numbered years thereafter, the APTA Board of Directors at its March meeting will appoint four (4) PAC trustees to serve a four-year term. The new trustees appointed will participate as guests during telephone conference calls July 1 to December 31 of the year appointed and be required to attend PPS that same year for orientation as a guest (non-voting member). New trustees will officially start their positions on January 1 the following year and serve a four-year term. Four new trustees will be appointed for a four-year term every two years thereafter in even numbered years.

The following criteria is used by the APTA Board of Directors when appointing new PT-PAC Trustees:

  • Participation in PT-PAC at the Eagle levels;
  • Ability to raise funds on behalf of PT-PAC;
  • Representation and diversity from APTA Sections and/or Assemblies;
  • Participation in APTA at the National level;
  • Representation and diversity of geographic regions of the country;
  • Knowledge, participation, and leadership in Government Affairs issues and activities;
  • Professionalism and leadership in organizational management.

Job Description - Board of Trustees

  • Each Trustee will take primary responsibility for recruitment and retention of donors to PT-PAC, including but not limited to club level participation.
  • Each Trustee will become familiar with the rules and regulations governing political action committees, primarily through the Federal Election Commission.
  • Each Trustee will attend at least one of APTA's conferences: Combined Sections Meeting (CSM), Annual Conference/House of Delegates, Educational Leadership Conference, and National Student Conclave. All trustees will attend the Private Practice Section (PPS) Annual Meeting.
  • During APTA conferences, each Trustee will staff the PT-PAC booth for the purposes of fundraising and member education on PT-PAC.
  • Each Trustee will advance the agenda of PT-PAC through participation in official meetings, conference calls, and activities in support of PT-PAC.
  • Each Trustee will mentor leaders and potential future trustees in fundraising and PAC acumen and management.
  • Each Trustee will be a resource for APTA's state Chapters and Sections regarding political advocacy, including state Chapter political action committees.


Roles and Responsibilities

  • Maintain active membership in APTA.
  • Contribute on an annual basis to PT-PAC at least at the Eagle club level.
  • Identify prospective club level participants among APTA members.
  • Identify fundraising strategies to meet the target contribution goals of PT-PAC.
